Support for families and babies who refuse to take a bottle in Anglesey and Gwynedd North Wales

The majority of babies are able to transition from taking the breast to the bottle and back again with no major issues.
However, some find it really difficult.
You may find them crying at the sight of a bottle, pulling away or arching their backs, spitting the milk from the corner of their mouths.
It can be very distressing for the whole family and stressful for the parents especially there is a need or want to add bottles, for example mental or physical health reasons, the need or desire to share feeding responsibilities or just to make life easier for the family
By looking at the reasons behind WHY your baby cannot or doesn't want to take a bottle we can support your baby to become familiar and accept with the bottle.

I set realistic expectations for you and your baby, and these will differ from one family to another.

A bottle refusing consult is a series of ongoing support with catch up sessions, usually virtually for a few weeks, the first contact can be done face to face or virtually.
In order for your little one to be able to feed from a bottle successfully there needs to be three elements working together.
-
The bottle and teat - are they the right fit and flow for your baby?
-
The person giving the bottle - are they responding to the baby and the bottle?
-
The baby - are they physically able to comfortably able, both physically and emotionally to the milk, bottle, the respond to the adult or do they need support?
Each consultation and baby is unique but a typical, with consent, will include:
-
prior to the consultation I will ask for quick 15 second video clips of the baby and how typically a bottle and breast feed is like
-
History taking of your journey so far, including breastfeeding and bottle feeding
-
a full feeding assessment - taking parent and baby into account,
including what is a typical bottle and breastfeed -
oral assessment - having a look and feel of your baby's mouth to establish if there is any issue within the baby's oral anatomy or suck
-
sucking assessment - how are they sucking?
-
physical movement - supporting the babys physical needs
-
introducing a bottle
homework to solidify the work done -
